Meet the Coaches: Joan Mathews

Meet the Coaches: Joan Mathews

Get ready to be inspired! We're thrilled to introduce one of our incredible coaches, Joan Mathews, a true veteran of the running world with a passion for helping others find their stride.

Joan's running journey began an astounding 44 years ago, right before she discovered she was pregnant with her daughter, now 43! That's decades of experience pounding the pavement and a testament to her enduring love for the sport.

Joan's coaching resume is just as impressive. She's dedicated over 15 years to coaching at the junior high and high school levels, shaping young athletes and instilling a love for running. Her commitment extends even further, having coached with Dave's for 12 years!

You might think that after so many years and a knee replacement 8 years ago, Joan might slow down, but that's not her style! She lives by the motto, "Move it or lose it!" and truly believes in the power of staying active. "I'm not good at sitting around," she admits, a sentiment many runners can surely relate to.

While she's conquered many distances, Joan's favorite used to be the half marathon. She fondly remembers the Ft. Meigs Half Marathon, a local gem that took runners "around the block… across Maumee bridge and Waterville bridge." It was her favorite race, a true test of endurance and local pride.

But ask Joan about her favorite group to coach, and her eyes light up when she talks about beginners. There's a special joy for her in guiding someone through their very first steps into the running world. And speaking of joy, she absolutely loves the Girls on the Run 5k. "I love all the enthusiasm and believe it’s a great program," she shares, highlighting her commitment to fostering a positive and empowering running environment.

Joan Mathews is more than just a coach; she's an inspiration, a mentor, and a testament to the lifelong benefits of staying active. We're incredibly lucky to have her on our team!
