Learn moreRunning in the Cold /Winter apparel
Winter in Sylvania doesn’t mean your running has to go into hibernation. While cold temperatures, wind, and the occasional lake-effect snow can make things challenging, the right apparel can keep you comfortable, safe, and motivated all season long. At Dave’s Running, we see runners of all levels stick with their training through winter—and the secret is knowing how to dress smart for Northwest Ohio conditions. Body Temperature Will Change as You Move A common mistake winter runners make is overdressing. If you feel warm standing still, you’re probably wearing too much. Aim to feel slightly chilly when you step outside—you’ll warm up quickly once you start moving. Master the Layering System Layering allows you to regulate body temperature and adapt to changing conditions. 1. Base Layer (Moisture Management)Your base layer should keep sweat off your skin. Look for moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or technical synthetics Avoid cotton—it traps moisture and leads to chills Long-sleeve tops and fitted tights work well for most winter days 2. Mid Layer (Insulation)This layer traps heat. Lightweight fleece or thermal tops are ideal On colder Sylvania mornings, this layer makes a big difference without bulk 3. Outer Layer (Protection)Northwest Ohio wind can be brutal. Wind-resistant or water-repellent jackets help block cold gusts Look for breathable panels so you don’t overheat A vest can be a great option on milder winter days Don’t Forget Your Extremities Cold hands, feet, and ears can end a run fast. Gloves or mittens: Start with lightweight gloves; upgrade to insulated mittens on frigid days Hats or headbands: A surprising amount of heat escapes through your head Socks: Merino Wool or thermal socks keep feet warm even if conditions are damp Winter Running Tights vs. Pants When temperatures drop below freezing, summer tights won’t cut it. Thermal tights with brushed interiors add warmth Wind-blocking panels on the front of tights are great for blustery days Running pants offer more room and warmth for very cold conditions Visibility Matters in Winter Shorter daylight hours mean more running in low-light conditions. Choose apparel with reflective elements Bright colors help drivers see you in snowy or gray conditions A clip-on light or reflective vest adds extra safety Shoes and Traction Tips Winter roads and sidewalks in Sylvania can be unpredictable. Consider shoes with better grip or trail-style outsoles For icy days, traction devices can add confidence Keep an extra dry pair of shoes ready for post-run comfort We’re Here to Help Winter running doesn’t have to be miserable—it can actually be one of the most rewarding times of the year. With fewer crowds and crisp air, many runners find winter miles build both physical and mental toughness. If you’re unsure what to wear, stop by your nearest Dave’s Running Shop in Sylvania, Perrysburg, Delta, or Findlay. Our team can help you find the right winter apparel for your pace, goals, and the ever-changing Northwest Ohio weather. Stay warm, stay visible, and keep running—spring miles start with winter strength.
